ethnicity tag

I have been following beauty blogs for a few years now and have always loved when things got a little personal. I feel that getting to know the person typing away behind the keyboard helps connect the readers to the blogger. While browsing bloglovin' the other night I came across a fun tag posted by Tips Capsule Blog called "the ethnicity tag". I thought it was so fun and decided to answer the questions today. Here we go!

What is your ethnicity?
Although I may not look like it, I'm actually half Chinese and half Macedonian.

When was the last time you visited your country?
The last time I visited Hong Kong was almost 9 years ago (it feels like only a few years ago though!). Unfortunately, I haven't visited Macedonia yet, but it is on my travel list!!

Name one household item that best represents your culture.
If I had to pick one item, it would definitely be a lucky cat. Having one in your house brings the owners good luck, health and prosperity. We also used the lucky cats as our wedding favours, so this holds a special sentimental meaning to me as well.

Name one ethnic food that you enjoy the most.
If I'm mixed, I'm allowed to pick two items, right? I love both Chinese and Macedonian cuisine.
One of my favourite Chinese items are the Cha Siu Bao (steamed/baked pork filled buns) I grew up with. They taste incredible and I can literally have this any time of the day.
My favourite Macedonian item would definitely be Zelnik. This savory dish is made with phyllo pastry stuffed with feta. My baba (grandma) makes this from scratch, hand rolling the layers of thin pastry like a pro. Love you, baba!

Side note, what is it with me loving carbs stuffed with things?! haha moving on...

What part of your country are you from?
My mom's family lives in Hong Kong while my dad's family moved to Canada from a small village in the southern region of Macedonia.

What song reminds you of your country?
I can't honestly say there is one song that reminds me of either country, however, I do recall those early Saturday mornings when my mom would be cleaning downstairs blasting Chinese opera, haha. I associate any Macedonian song I hear with weddings. We attended many, many weddings when I was younger (my extended Macedonian family is pretty big).

Do you speak your language?
Sadly no, my parents spoke english to us so that the other parent could understand as well. People find it strange but it has always made sense to me.

If you found this tag interesting, feel free to share your story on your blog and let me know! I would be more than happy to check it out!

  1. I have always thought you have Asian background so that's so cool to know. Love this tag, Christine, I enjoy getting to know you a little better. We speak two languages in our home; I speak Mandarin and my husband speaks English to our little one. We considered the possibility of me speaking more languages to him because I also speak Cantonese and Malay language but finally decided not to because we thought it would be too much for him.

    1. That's amazing! Is your husband picking up on Mandarin as well or does he know Mandarin as well? It's so helpful knowing multiple languages!

    2. Oh hell no, my husband doesn't know it so me and the boy will have our own language. Hahaha!

  2. This was such a fun tag to read! I agree, it's always nice to get to know the person behind the blog and get to know them a bit more. My ethnicity is complicated as I'm adopted, but I know my birth mom is half asian and my birth dad is French/British. But my adopted family is German/Italian! So the culture I was raised in is very different from my ethnicity :)

  3. Great post! I always love to hear more about where other people are from. My family line is rather boring (Mum from England, Dad born Canadian.) It's neat that your parents spoke English at home, but I'm sure learning another language might have been nice as well! :)
