burberry festive mini lip velvet set review

It’s that wonderful time of year again where we start seeing brands coming out with their holiday gift sets. I’m such a sucker for cute packaging, so holiday gift sets are exactly up my alley. Holiday sets are a great way to try out several products from a brand that you may not normally pick up on your own, or you want to test them out before you commit to purchasing a full sized product. When I first saw the Burberry Festive Mini Lip Velvet Set ($45 cdn) on the Sephora site, I instantly added it to cart. From the packaging to the shade selection, it seemed that these four mini lipsticks were exactly what I needed for this holiday season.

What’s Included:
1x 0.02 oz Lip Velvet in Oxblood No. 437
1x 0.02 oz Lip Velvet in Damson No. 425
1x 0.02 oz Lip Velvet in Nude Rose No. 405
1x 0.02 oz Lip Velvet in Military Red No. 429

Packaging
Burberry’s iconic print is patterned throughout each lipstick. It has a mirrored gold exterior that is beautiful to look at, but finger prints are easily visible. The lipstick case is made of plastic and doesn’t have too much weight to it, so if you’re like me and prefer something that feels sturdy, you might prefer the full sized lipsticks instead. They have a standard snap closure, which I feel could have been elevated to normal Burberry quality if they used a magnetic closure instead.

Product
These lipsticks are tiny! I knew when I was ordering them that they were mini but didn’t realize how small they were until they had arrived. As beautiful as they look and as highly praised as Burberry lipsticks are, I was shocked to see that each lipstick had less product than a deluxe sample I can get for free at Sephora!

However, the velvet lipsticks themselves are perfect. They have a smooth and creamy application with great colour payoff. These lippies last a few hours before they start fading on my lips. Burberry claims that their velvet lipsticks are “light-as-air, comfortable wear lipstick [that] delivers defined shape and continuous colour with a lasting velvet [matte] finish”.

Oxblood No. 437: This is a coveted deep burgundy shade that applies incredibly smooth and has a semi-matte finish on me.
Damson No. 425: My favourite of the set – a berry toned shade that offers a beautiful matte finish with one swipe across the lips.
Nude Rose No. 405: The lightest shade; a pinky-nude that has more of a satin finish on me.
Military Red No. 429: A vibrant and saturated red that compliments the term “festive”. A perfect red that applies creamy and evenly leaving you with a beautiful matte finish.

Verdict
I have a hard time justifying the cost of this for the amount of product. The lipsticks themselves are beautiful and for that reason, I would rather pick up a full sized lipstick instead. However, I wouldn’t have realized how great these lipsticks truly are if I hadn’t picked up this set!

If you’re looking for a cute stocking stuffer and want to try out a variety of shades from the velvet lipstick line and can look past the size of this set, then I say go for it! You won’t be disappointed with the outcome of the product itself. However, if you’re like me and you want the best of both worlds – quality packaging and a great product, I suggest heading to your local Sephora or department store and test out a few shades before you commit to the full sized velvet lipstick.

Repurchase?
I will definitely be picking up a couple of full sized lipsticks from Burberry this coming winter, but if unfortunately, I would pass on purchasing this set again. It is no doubt adorable, but I can’t look past the quantity vs. the cost.

What is your favourite Burberry product?
Let me know in the comments what I should try next from the brand!

  3. I have yet to try Burberry Lippies but they do look adorable! I love the packaging - too bad it was such a small size for the price... like $10 a sample is a bit much!
